OAKLEY, ANNIE]. BUTLER, FRANK S., Actor, husband of Annie Oakley . Autograph letter signed ("Frank S. Butler") to "General Sale Manager, COLT ARMS. CO.," NEW YORK, 9 SEPTEMBER [1890S?]. 1 PAGE, 4TO, VERY LIGHT BROWNING, TWO SMALL REPAIRS AT LOWER EDGE . ORDERING A COLT CUSTOM TARGET PISTOL FOR ANNIE OAKLEY "Some time since you gave me a price on a revolver for Annie Oakley. Now I have an officers model in a one barrel action fitted with partrodge sights the barrel is 7 1/2 inch long to[o] long for quick mark. Can you cut it down to six inch b[arre]l and put partridge sights back without hurting the shooting[?]. Kindly let me know if this can be done and how long it would take to do it...." Butler (1850-1926) and Oakley had met as contestants in a shooting competition in 1875 (which she won) and were married the following year; they joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1882, and were popular performers there until about 1902. Butler served as Annie's business manager, devised shooting stunts for her to perform and tended and cared for her guns. "Only a few letters of Annie Oakley survive and those of her marksman husband are even rarer" (Charles Hamilton The Signature of America , 1979, p. 2).
