Author: Gilpin, William Place: London Publisher: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies Date: 1798 Description: xvi, 359, [1] ad pp. Eighteen tinted aquatint plates after drawings by Gilpin. (8vo) later 3/4 blind-ruled calf over green cloth, spine gilt-decorated, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, all edges marbled. First Edition The final entry in Gilpin's series of travels around Great Britain in quest of picturesque landscapes and buildings. The plates are predominantly gray and black and possess a somber beauty. The subjects include Glastonbury Abbey, Dunster Castle, Lidford Castle, Netley Abbey, etc. Strangely, although Gilpin discusses Stonehenge at length, he does not include a picture of the monument. Abbey, Scenery, 26. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints rubbed, hinges cracked; light foxing; else very good. Item number: 185913
