Of New Jersey Interest: A Large American Silver Three-Handled Presentation Cup, Tiffany & Co., New York, 1890-91 of trophy form with a bulbous base supporting a gourd-form body divided by applied laurel stems with owl heads at top, depicting allegorical and historical motifs in three sections, the first with New Jersey state seal flanked by the scales and sword of Justice, between two other handles are an American solider and a possible Viking, the third section plain; the lower shaft with raised imagery of ploughs from the state seal, the base depicting buffalo and eagle heads, and two Beggars medals, gilt interiormarked on underside and numbered 10517-M-10?09, marked 13 1/2 Qt., the arms are those of the state of New Jersey155oz 10 dwt4839gheight 14 1/5 in.36.83 cmCondition reportPresentation inscription has been removed from neck but not thin, loss to gilding, dented handled and slightly pushed in, other light dents and marks, impressive scale and interesting and specific iconography. The cup may have been presented to Governor Robert Stockton Green upon his departure from office. The symbols of Justice may reflect his profession of lawyer.
