Beschreibung:

Auctore P. Joanne David, Sacerdote Soecietatis Iesu. Editio altera, auctior. Antwerp, Plantin, 1606, (16),374,(2),(32 index) p., with engraved title, 100 plates by Philips Galle (with captions in Latin, Dutch and French), 1 almost full-p. illustration and 1 full-p. lottery illustration incorporating a volvelle (leaf Aa4, with an engraving with the letters "MAR" pasted to the back of this volvelle), woodcut initials, endpieces and printer's mark at the end, contemp. blindst. and gilt calf, front cover with central oval IHS mark, back cover with a similar oval stamp with the Virgin and Child on a crescent moon, ribbed spine with later mor. letterpiece, 4to.
As usual without the lvs. of sheet music at the end. Title remargined at lower edge, traces of crudely removed library stamp on the page following the title; occas. sl. foxed. Lacks free endpapers and ties; spine ends and outer corners worn, foot of spine restored. Good and attractively (and fittingly) bound copy, the volvelle "Quarite et invienetis" in good working order (fitted with the original copper axis). The rare second edition of this beautifully and very richly illustrated work by the Jesuit Jan David (c. 1545-1613). Funck 302; Praz 313. Cf. Landwehr 183 (3rd ed.) and 182, stating that Galle first issued the plates separately in Icones ad Veridicum Christianum.
