OLD IRONSIDES ARCHIVE.] An album containing letters and documents relating to the U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides") including several war-date letters from the naval heroes of the War of 1812. MACDONOUGH, Thomas (1783-1825), Admiral . Autograph letter signed ("T. Macdonough"), to Capt. Oliver H. Perry, Vergennes, [Vermont], 9 May 1814. 1 page, 4to, tipped . A DRAMATIC LETTER AT THE OUTSET OF HIS FAMOUS CLASH ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN. "I am short by 200 [men]," he tells Perry, "& were they here we could enter the Lake in a few days with a force I think sufficient..." Four days after this letter, Macdonough blasted away a British squadron with his guns planted on the shoreline, sending the enemy back to Canada badly damaged. He followed this success with his great victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh. A dramatic letter from this pivotal moment in the war. -- HULL, Isaac. Autograph letter signed to Lt. Comm. Oliver H.
