Engraved vignette on title, 69 full-page engraved illustrations by Antonio Tempesta and Francesco Villamena including the cancelled leaves D3, D5 and F1, the cancels bound in but F1 loose. Contemporary gilt-paneled mottled calf, with John Evelyn's monogram at the angles (a few repairs, slightly dry). Provenance : Sir Richard Browne John Evelyn's father-in-law (leaf with engraved arms bound in before title); John Evelyn (1620-1706), English writer, gardener and diarist (inscription on title "Catalogo Evelyni Inscriptus: 1645 Romae. Meliora Retinete; press mark "L.29"; binding; later bookplate; sold Christie's London, 15 March 1978, lot 1101); aquired in 1984. FIRST EDITION of this work on birds and bird-catching. Uccelliera is a discourse on the characteristics of the many birds to be found in Italy, and gives instructions on their care, and identifies their habits and songs. The work also contains an etching of an instrumental group, describing the playing techniques and make-up of ensembles. It includes depictions of a viola da braccio and a viola da gamba, as well as a harpsichordist, lutenist and other instrumentalists. John Evelyn in his Elysium Brittanicum , illustrates an aviary that is very similar to the one illustrated in Olina's work on K1v.
