OLIVA, Joan] (fl. 1570-1614), Portolan Chart of the North Atlantic, Western Europe and North America [Marseilles: c.1600] Illuminated manuscript portolan chart, vellum, heightened in gold, 520 x 710mm. The chart extending from Georgia to Greenland in the Americas, and from Southern Norway to Senegal along the western coastlines of Europe and Africa, coastlines in blue, green and maroon, rivers in blue, numerous coastal placenames in black and red, North Africa and North America decorated with stylised mountain symbols, one monster-like fish, 15 decorative elaborate compass roses arranged in a circular pattern around the centre point of the chart, scale bars at lower and upper margins, the whole chart divided by a network of rhumb lines, gold border. An exceptionally fine portolan chart of the North Atlantic, carefully drawn and lavishly illuminated in gold. The chart concentrates on the French possessions of North America but extends southwards to Georgia. The depiction of North America is based on the early 16th century Spanish discoveries by Esteban Gomez and Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon (1524-26), rather than the later English and French expeditions of the late 16th century.
