Paris, 1953-1965. All the major publications of the press are present. Together approximately 350 books and pieces of ephemera, most FIRST EDITIONS, most 8 o , in original bindings. Provenance : Angus Carroll, editor of The Paris Olympia Press (bibliography by Patrick J. Kearney, rev. ed. 2007), head of the editorial group for Gale Publishing, organizer of the Darwin Census, and son of Olympia Press author Jock Carroll. THE ANGUS CARROLL COLLECTION: EDITOR OF THE DEFINITIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE CELEBRATED OLYMPIA PRESS "When my father [Jock Carroll] died in 1995, I found a half-dozen green paperbacks in his office, his own book included -- Bottoms Up -- all volumes in the now infamous Traveller's Companion Series. Not realizing what I was getting into, I thought it would be fun to collect the set. Thus began my ten-year odyssey with the Olympia Press" (Angus Carroll, "The Good, the Bad, and the Obscene," in Fine Books & Collections , No.8.2, Summer 2010, pp.26-31, copy of the magazine included in this lot). The present collection showcases the enormous diversity, breadth and importance of the famous -- and infamous -- Olympia Press, and includes a significant number of unique and special items collected by Angus Carroll during his extensive career as a collector and editor of the definitive bibliography of the press. A summary of highlights includes: Postcard signed by Henry Miller referring to Sexus being published in Paris; two sets of 1st edition Lolitas (2 vols. each), one with a price sticker overlaid on Vol 1 (the so-called second issue), both in near fine condition; Maurice Girodias' business card in a first edition (with price sticker) of Lolita , written in ink on the card, "With the compliments of"; signed first editions in the Traveller's Companion Series including: Jean Cocteau ( The White Paper ); William Burroughs ( The Ticket that Exploded ); Gregory Corso ( The American Express ); Paul Ableman ( I Hear Voices ); Lawrence Durrell ( The Black Book ); and Henry Cranach [Marilyn Meeske Sorel] ( Flesh and Bone ); dust jackets present for all books that call for them; the original uncancelled dust jacket on the first hardcover printing of The Ginger Man by Olympia Press (extremely rare), also a copy of the book with cancelled flaps; a collection of fakes, forgeries, and copycats from the period; an original copy of Kidnap (Ophir Press) -- taken apart, the pages re-numbered, and put back together -- that was used by Milton Luros to create the knock-off Brandon House photo-reproduction of the book (a copy of the Brandon House book also included); four of the six "Teasers," small promotional booklets published by Girodias in 1953 and 1954, two of which are very rare (there is no known copy of the sixth Teaser); complete set of first printings of the Traveler's Companion Series, the most famous of the Olympia Press imprints, and almost all later printings of each title by Olympia Press (Kearney 5.1 to 5.95; 5.72 not published by Olympia, but the Obelisk edition of the same period included); an extensive collection of Olympia Press sales catalogues and price lists that provide addresses, prices, release dates and other important details about the press; a complete set of the non-Olympia Press books published by Girodias during the Olympia Press period (2 large hardcover books on architecture and a complete set of the travel guides to France that Girodias published in 1955 and 1956); a "brown paper package tied up with string" from Girodias (with his name printed on the address label), addressed to Jock Carroll, containing five (5) copies of Bottoms Up , No. 86 in the Traveller's Companion Series (written by Carroll), all in as new condition, with original postal marks and
