FARIA Y SOUSA, MANUEL DE. (3). Asia Portuguesa. I-III. Lisboa (Henrique Valente de Oliviera, vol. I, and Antonio Craesbeeck, vol. II-III) 1666, 1674-75. Folio (about 290x195 mm.). 3 engraved titles, 25 folding engraved or woodcut maps or plans(5 maps from vol. II as duplicates in vol III), 3 engraved and 50 woodcut portraits (many full-page) in the text. Contemporary brown calf, somewhat worn, richly gilt spines in seven compartments, red edges. Vol. I some dampstaining at beginning and end. Minor foxing. Old signatures on first endpapers and title to vol. III. 3 volumes. Collated: I. Engraved title, (30), 1-396, (42, lacks last blank leaf) pp., 11 engraved plans and maps; II. Engraved title, (6), 1-968, (2, lacks last blank leaf) pp., 6 engraved plates and maps; III: Engraved title; (6), (1)-564, (4, lacks errata-leaf) pp., 8 woodcut plans or maps (5 duplicates from vol. II). Löwendahl: China illustrata nova. Supplement, 1570. First edition. A second edition of vol. I appeared in 1703 and an abridged English version appeared in 1694 /95. Deals with the Portuguese empire in Asia, ritual and customs in China, India, and South East Asia. Manuel Faria y Sousa (1590-1649). Avid chronicler and polyglot, Faria y Sousa lived in Madrid for most of his life in the service of the Spanish Crown. Here he collected books, dispatches and manuscript materials of all kinds in preparation of his chronicle of the Portuguese empire across the globe. On his decease in 1649, Faria y Sousa's significant archive of books and manuscripts returned to the custody of his son who prepared the present work for publication. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
