(Somewhat browned, marginal wormtrack expertly repaired in quires h-p.) CONTEMPORARY VENETIAN BROWN GOATSKIN tooled in blind, outer border formed of repeat foliate stamps, inner lozenge of foliate roll, at centre the figure of Fortune, upper fore-edges lettered, edges sprinkled later, missing two fore-edge ties (minor skilful restorations at corners and spine ends). Provenance : Rouvier de Vaulgran (20th-century bookplate). Oppian's poem on fishing was the first book on the subject to be printed (in 1478). It contains most of the ichthyological knowledge of the early Christian era, describes methods for catching fish and the translator Lippi adds recipes for cooking, distichs on animals, fruit, minerals, precious stones, etc. To this Strassburg edition are added two chapters on fish from Pliny's Natural History, and a work on the subject by Jovius.
