Beschreibung:

Pen and ink on bristol board, measuring 14x21½". Very fine condition, some toning and fingermarks to margins. Original art by Gene Ahern for "The Squirrel Cage" Sunday comic strip, dated January 2, 1938. In this strip, Ahern's bearded hitchhiker thumbs a ride from pedal-to-the-metal motorist Otto Auto. Fans of R. Crumb will observe the hitchhiker's uncanny resemblance to Mr. Natural, and will also notice that the bearded vagabond's nonsensical catchphrase, "Nov shmoz ka pop," has popped up in Crumb's own work. According to Don Markstein's online Toonopedia, "Cartoonist R. Crumb has acknowledged [Ahearn's 'Little Hitchhiker'] as an influence in the design of Mr. Natural." A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact [email protected] . Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera.
