Bingham, a Salisbury, CT native and Valedictorian of the Dartmouth Class of 1782, was an author of many school textbooks, most notably, The Columbian Orator. In 1796 he opened a bookstore in Boston. The present invoice is for the Cook’s set at $2.50 sold to a Mr. Spafford and has a full page ink narrative on the reverse “Mr. Spafford Sir, I was obliged to ------go in to town from Cambridge to get your books which cost me 1/6 and the toll of going over the bridge was /6”. He goes on to tell of his apparent difficulty in delivery of the books, and is signed in an illegible hand. From the Calvin Otto Collection.
