Title: Original manuscript invoice dated 1800 for the purchase of a two volume set of Cook’s Voyages from the Boston bookseller and author Caleb Bingham Author: Bingham, Caleb Place: Boston Publisher: Date: 1800 Description: Original manuscript invoice dated 1800 for the purchase of a 2 volume set of Cook’s Voyages from the Boston bookseller/author Caleb Bingham (1757-1817). 4½x7½". Bingham, a Salisbury, CT native and Valedictorian of the Dartmouth Class of 1782, was an author of many school textbooks, most notably, The Columbian Orator. In 1796 he opened a bookstore in Boston. The present invoice is for the Cook’s set at $2.50 sold to a Mr. Spafford and has a full page ink narrative on the reverse “Mr. Spafford Sir, I was obliged to ------go in to town from Cambridge to get your books which cost me 1/6 and the toll of going over the bridge was /6”. He goes on to tell of his apparent difficulty in delivery of the books, and is signed in an illegible hand. From the Calvin Otto Collection. Lot Amendments Condition: In very good condition and a rare example of an early American bookseller’s invoice. Item number: 266200
