Map is 36.5x39 cm (14¼x15½"); overall 73.5x53 cm (29x20¾") plus margins. Striking map/broadside produced at the end of the Mexican-American War, colored to reflect the newly-acquired territories. Warren Heckrotte describes some of the decorative features of the broadside: "At top, portraits of Washington, Gen. Taylor and Gen Scott. Below that, 'Panoramic View from New York to the Pacific Ocean by the Contemplated Oregon Railroad.' Below that the map. At each side of map, brief entries for the States and Territories of the United States. Below the map at left a view of 'Great Temple Dedicated to the Sun Destroyed by Cortez in 1521'; at right a view of 'The Halls of the Montezumas.' Between these a view showing 'An American Exhibiting to the Sovereigns of Europe the Progress of His Country.' All surrounded by decorative border." Provenance: Brick Row, 7/99 References: W-GR 38.
