Engraved allegorical title, engraved portrait, and 119 hand-colored double-page maps, most by Frans Hogenberg, mounted on guards, ALL FINELY COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, ruled in red. Text in French. (Some minor marginal dampstaining at beginning and end, some maps with minor fraying a few with minor marginal repairs, stain to inner margin of title and first few leaves, tiny abrasions to inner margin of Pacific map 6, map 23 with short marginal tear, map 119 with short internal tear.) Contemporary, probably Parisian, brown morocco gilt, central coat-arms of Vicomte Blondel de Vadencourt dated 1600 (Olivier 14), monograms “V” or “ABD” stamped in each corner, flat spine in 8 compartments, gilt lettered in second, others stamped with alternating monograms, edges gilt (spine ends and corners skillfully restored, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Vicomte Blondel de Vadencourt (coat-of-arms dated 1600 printed on verso of otherwise blank Privilege page; binding). LAST FRENCH EDITION OF ORTELIUS'S THEATRUM , WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE SUPERBLY COLORED COPY OF ORTELIUS' ENLARGED THEATRUM , ASSEMBLING 116 UNIFORM MAPS OF THE WORLD AND 3 MAPS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD, INCLUDING THE MOST RENOWNED CARTOGRAPHERS OF THAT PERIOD Several editions were printed at the Officina Plantiniana at the end of the sixteenth century and from 1585 Ortelius began to include historical maps in a section called "Peregrination." The Atlas includes Ortelius' famous world map: "Typus Orbis Terrarum," followed by his map of the Americas "Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio," (dated 1587, Ortelius’ third plate), maps of Asia, Africa, Europe and numerous regional maps. Originally published in 1570 with 53 maps, this French edition is extended to 119 maps. "The publication of this atlas [the 1570 first edition] marked an epoch in the history of cartography. It was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps of the countries of the world based only on contemporary knowledge and in that sense may be called the first modern atlas" (Tooley).
