Othon Coubine [Otakar Kubin] (Czechoslovakian/French, 1883-1969) Poirier en Fleurs Signed "Coubine" l.r., titled on a label, possibly in the artist's hand, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 18 x 22 in. (45.7 x 55.9 cm), framed. Condition: Minor surface grime, subtle varnish inconsistencies. N.B. Otakar Kubin was an avant-garde Czech artist and was a founding member of the Expressionist-leaning Osma group, translated as "The Eight". (1) He studied art in Prague between 1900 and 1904, but also painted in France, Italy and Antwerp at this time. After World War I, he moved to France, where he adopted a French transcription of his name. He worked in Auvergne and the Alps, eventually settling in the village of Simiane-la-Rotonde in Provence. Kubin, who painted landscapes, figures, and still lifes, developed a Cubo-Expressionist style influenced by Paul Cezanne and Edvard Munch He participated in exhibits at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants, and international exhibitions in Geneva, Hamburg, Dresden, and Tokyo.
