OVERBEKE, Bonaventura van. Reliquae antiquae urbis Romae. Rome: Joannes Crellius, 1708. 3 volumes in one, 2° (523 x 395mm). Half-title, three titles in red and black with engraved vignettes. Engraved frontispiece, portrait of the dedicatee, Queen Anne, portrait of Overbeke, one double-page map of Rome, 146 plates, one double-page, one tailpiece and 33 illustrations of medallions. (Some old generally light dampstaining to margins, the double-page plate somewhat browned.) Contemporary red morocco gilt over thick pasteboard, French royal arms block, (variant of Olivier 2494 fer 10) decorative borders on sides, roll-tooled, incorporating fleurs-de-lys, dolphins, monogrammed double L, pairs of horns and swords, crowned double L mongram in compartments of spine (variant of Olivier 2494 fer 21) surrounded by various small tools and larger fleurs-de-lys (some wear, one corner stained). Provenance : Louis XIV (1738-1815, binding); John, Viscount Tyrconnel (d. 1754, armorial bookplate); John, 1st Earl Brownlow (Belton House armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION of one of the most ambitious Dutch antiquarian works of the Baroque period on ancient Rome. Good copy with sharp impressions of the large engravings.
