Ecloga Oxonio-Catabrigiensis, tributa in Libros duos; quorum prior continet Catalogum confusum Librorum Manuscriptorum in illustrissimis Bibliothecis duarum florentissimarum Academiarum, Oxoniae & Cantabrigae. Posterior, Catalogum eorundem distinctum & dispositum secundum quatuor facultates... . London: (Arnold Hatfield for) George Bishop & John Norton 1600. Two parts in one, 4 o (198 x 141 mm). Woodcut printer's device of Hatfield on second title. Contemporary Swiss or German vellum, endleaves with Bâle watermark. A very fine copy of the first major work of bibliography by the first Bodley's Librarian, Thomas James "From the first Bodley had fixed upon James as his library keeper, and the appointment was confirmed by the university in 1602" (DNB). "The earliest printed 'Union Catalogue', compiled by the great first Bodley's Librarian. In the first part he lists all the manuscripts at Oxford and Cambridge under the names of the colleges who owned them, including Cambridge University Library; in the second part the manuscripts are arranged alphabetically under the four principal disciplines" (Breslauer & Foldter, no. 42). The catalogue includes a list of Archbishop Mathew Parker's important bequest of manuscripts to Cambridge, which are now preserved at Corpus Christi. VERY SCARCE. STC 14453.
