Pottinger went to India in 1804 as a cadet and rose to rank of Lieutenant General in the East India Company. He then served as Plenipotentiary in China in 1841, before becoming administrator and first Governor of Hong Kong between 1841 and 1844. In addition, he was governor of both Cape Colony and Madras in 1847. He died the same year, having retired to Malta. A hand-painted coat of arms
