both 19th century and oil on canvas. The male sitter is signed Ira C. Denise in the right center, and female sitter is signed in the same area above the red upholstered chair. Both portraits measure 24.5" x 29.5" (sight), 30.5" x 35.5" (w/frames). Ira Denise (1840-1901) was born in Franklin and moved to Cincinnati in 1858 to begin his career as an artist. He exhibited at the Cincinnati Industrial Expositions in 1872 and 1874. He traveled throughout the region painting landscapes, going as far as Florida and Italy on two trips. In all likelihood, this pair of portraits is a result of Denise's employment under Leon Van Loo (Photographer, 1847-1907), an influential Cincinnati figure, collector, and founding member of the Cincinnati Art Club, who hired Denise to execute portrait enlargements during 1869-1870. Denise apparently detested the work, preferring landscapes. Condition: Each with one area of inpainting 2" in diameter in upper right background, with patch on female in this area. Light craquelure in both.
