Pair of Rare and Important Art Nouveau Gold, Molded Glass, Enamel, Diamond and Pearl 'Chrysanthemum' Bracelets/Necklace Combination, Rene Lalique Composed of ten clusters of forty stylized molded opalescent glass chrysanthemum blossoms, the centers of varying blue hues, mounted atop gold plaques applied with blue enamel, spaced by leaves applied with blue enamel atop silver foil, outlined in green enamel, centering a stylized trellis motif applied with green enamel, tipped by 20 pearls approximately 5.2 to 4.2 mm., centering and joined by 20 cushion-cut and square-shaped cushion-cut diamonds approximately 8.00 cts., within gold square plaques, signed Lalique, circa 1901-1903. Lengths 7, 6 3/4 and 13 3/4 inches. René Jules Lalique (1860-1945) was a French designer whose varied creations over his long career included jewelry, glass, bronze, clocks, automobile hood ornaments and objets de vertu. Recognized as one of the leading French Art Nouveau jewelry designers, Lalique began his career at the age of 16 as an apprentice to the Parisian jeweler Louis Aucoc. He spent his childhood summers in the French country village of Ay, Marne, which contributed to the influence of naturalistic themes in his designs. Upon finishing school, he worked as a freelance designer for such jewelers as Cartier and Boucheron, before opening his own jewelry business in 1885. Lalique began to incorporate uncommon materials in his pieces, such as glass, horn and enamel, and his designs won prestigious awards, including first prize at the Salon of Paris and the Croix de la Legion d'Honneur at the Exposition Internationale in Brussells. Prominent women, such as the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt commissioned pieces from his firm. In 1900, fifty million visitors attended the landmark Exposition Universelle in Paris, and Lalique's innovative Art Nouveau jewelry, displayed in his specially designed showroom, created an international sensation. The firm enjoyed a flurry of new commissions, and Lalique was recognized as the leading jeweler of the day. This pair of bracelets/necklace combination dates to the period immediately following his stunning success at the Exposition Universelle. Evident are Lalique's use of innovative materials and his incorporation of naturalistic motifs. It is a rare and excellent example of Lalique's work at the zenith of his career as a jewelry designer. Please note that the illustration reference is Barten, S., Rene Lalique, Schmuck und Objets d'art, pp. 454-455, illustration 1271,2. C A Private Collection, New York and Florida
