PALERMO 1735 -- LA PLACA, Pietro. La Reggia in trionfo per l'acclamazione, e coronazione di Carlo Infante di Spagna, Re di Sicilia, Napoli, e Gerusalemme . Palermo: Antonino Epiro, 1736. 2 o (308 x 212 mm). Engraved frontispiece by GIUSEPPE VASI and 22 engraved plates (19 double-page and 2 folding) after NICCOLO PALMA, GIUSEPPE VASI ARCADIO LA MANNA, and GIUSEPPE LI COTTI (some plates linen-backed, a few repairs). 19th-century half morocco, monogram "WSM" stamped in blind on front cover, spine gilt-lettered (some rubbing and light wear). Provenance : William Stirling (binding and bookplate). La Placa's account of the celebrations for the reception and coronation of CHARLES VII (1716-1788), King of Naples and Sicily, later King of Spain, at Palermo in 1735. The designer of the festivities was royal architect Niccolo Palma and the engraved plates after his drawings illustrate the monuments, arches, decorations, and fireworks he conceived for the event. La Placa describes in great detail these official decorations, as well as those erected by the private citizens of Palmero and the local trade guilds. The large folding plate shows the King's royal procession from the harbor into Palermo with a panoramic vista of the mountains in the background. Berlin 3070; Palau 131416; Vinet 603; Watanabe 670.
