PALLAS, Peter Simon (editor) – Neueste [i.e. Neue ] Nordische Beyträge zur physikalischen und geographischen Erd- und Völkerbeschreibung, Naturgeschichte und Oekonomie. Zweyter [– Dritter ] Band [i.e. vols 6 and 7]. St. Petersburg and Leipzig: Johann Zacharias Logan 1793, 1796. The first edition of the last two volumes of this important serial publication with reports on Russian exploration. They include the first edition of Steller’s voyage to Kamchatka, “the most important contemporary account of Bering’s second voyage” (Howes), and the first German translation of Shelekhov’s report on the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. Shelekhov established the first permanent Russian settlement in Alaska; the Russian edition is “extremely rare” (Lada-Mocarski) – this is the first obtainable edition. After the first four volumes in this series were published, ten years elapsed before the last three volumes began to appear; this prompted the publisher to issue an alternate title for these last three volumes, in which they are numbered 1-3 instead of 5-7 and in which the title is changed from “Neue” to “Neueste”. Some sets include both titles, and others, as here, include the cancel titles only. See lot 44 for the offprint issue of Steller’s work; that offprint features an engraving that is noted by Lada-Mocarski but not required in this edition. Arctic Bib. 13057; Chavanne 163; Howes S-935; Lada-Mocarski 31, 51 and cf. 49 (for Shelekhov); Wickersham 5806. Two volumes, octavo (205 x 120mm). Engraved folding map in vol. 2 [i.e. vol 6] (lacking one plate in vol. 2; old repair in the margin of the last leaf of vol. 2; short tear in the map at one of the folds; minor spotting in the title page of vol. 2). Modern half calf with flat spines, red morocco labels. Provenance : Antiquariat Ralf Eigl.
