PANIZZI, Anthony, Sir (1797-1879). An extensive collection of pamphlets, offprints, extracts, and broadsides collected by Sir Anthony Panizzi, Chief Librarian of the British Museum Library. Comprising 276 items in 27 volumes, 1830-1864, most in English and Italian, MANY PRESENTATION COPIES, from associates such as CHARLES BABBAGE, WILLIAM GLADSTONE, GIUSEPPE MAZZINI, CHARLES ELIOT NORTON, JAMES DE ROTHSCHILD, and many others. Various 12 o-4 o sizes. 13 volumes in quarter or half morocco, 8 in boards and 6 in buckram, each with gilt letter "P" at head of spine and numbered consecutively, spines gilt-lettered (as listed below) (several covers detached, some wear and rubbing). Provenance : Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879), Chief Librarian at the British Museum Library (presentation inscriptions from the authors, some manuscript annotations, given to); Louis Fagan, his Godson, who left the collection in 1880 to; The Reform Club, Pall Mall, founded 1834 (bookplates and inkstamps in some volumes, some spines with gilt stamp at foot; sold Sotheby's London, 27 July 1964, lot 392).
