Gold-plated repoussé scroll pattern against a plain ground, Lucky Curve #2 nib. Excellent condition. An extremely rare and beautiful design, one of the rarest Parker pens today. The No. 43 is, together with the "Aztec" and No. 39, one of the few high-relief pens produced by Parker (who preferred overlays using filigree and engraved designs). Priced at $10.00, it was one of the more expensive pens in the 1910 catalogue, which pronounced it "exquisite ...a more pleasing pen could hardly be selected." It was also available in Sterling Silver as a No. 44, at a more modest $8.00. Provenance: Originally sold to Mr. Saragga in Bonhams Vintage Fountain Pens sale, Knightsbridge, July 21, 2000. The estimate was £10,000-12,000; the hammer price was £14,200 ($22,000+). LITERATURE: 1. The Parker Pen Co. "Side Talks," January 1910 (Pen Collectors of America Library Reprint, early 1990's). 2. Andreas Lambrou, Fountain Pens of the World, pp. 58-59, no. 3. Classic Pens, 1995. 3. George Fischler & Stuart Schneider, Fountain Pens and Pencils: The Golden Age of Writing Instruments, p. 100. Schiffer, 1990.
