PARKINSON, Sydney. [FIRST VOYAGE] -- A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, In His Majesty's Ship The Endeavour . London: Printed for Charles Dilly and James Phillips 1784. 4 o (320 x 265 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait, double-page chart and 27 engraved plates (some soiling and rubbing to plates). Contemporary tree calf, gilt (some cracking, wear at extremities). Provenance : John Munns (19th century ownership inscription on free front endpaper). Second Edition, LARGE PAPER ISSUE. Parkinson accompanied Cook on his first voyage aboard the Endeavour as natural history draughtsman. He succumbed to fever and dysentery and was buried at sea. The present edition compiled by Parkinson's friend Dr. Fothergill, reissues the first edition of 1773 and enlarges it by the addition of Fothergill's remarks concerning the dispute that arose between Joseph Banks and Stanfield Parkinson, the author's brother, regarding the original publication. An appendix describing further voyages is also added, nearly doubling the size of the first edition. Sabin 58788; Hill pp.224-5; Mitchell Library Cook 714; Holmes 49.
