PASSE, Crispin van de (1589-1670). Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivam veramque formam accuratissime delineatae ... Utrecht & Arnheim: Crispin van de Pass and J. Jansson, 1614.
PASSE, Crispin van de (1589-1670). Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivam veramque formam accuratissime delineatae ... Utrecht & Arnheim: Crispin van de Pass and J. Jansson, 1614. Four parts in one volume, small oblong 2 o (179 x 267 mm). Engraved general title, three letterpress sectional titles; 4 engraved garden views and 99 engraved plates as enumerated below. 20th-century quarter morocco, edges gilt, by J. MacDonald. Provenance : acquired from George Staack, 1962. THE LATIN TEXT ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND INFLUENTIAL OF THE EARLY FLORILEGIA. There is great discrepancy between copies in the number of plates and their states, the present copy is made up as follows: Part I [ Ver ], engraved general title with integral circular portrait roundels of Dodoens and Clusius [after Joannes Jansson, 1614] (verso blank), 13 letterpress leaves, engraved Epigramma leaf, engraved garden plate with text for plate I on verso, and 41 numbered engraved plates of plants all but pl. 41 with Latin text on verso. -- Part II Aestas , letterpress title (contemporary manuscript index on verso), one letterpress leaf, engraved garden plate with text for plate I on verso, and 19 numbered engraved plates of plants all but pl. 19 with Latin text on verso. (Plate 3 with repaired tear in gutter margin.) -- Part III Autumnus , letterpress title (verso blank), 2 letterpress leaves, engraved garden plate with text for plate I on verso, and 27 numbered engraved plates of plants, all but the last 2 with Latin text on verso. -- Part IV Hyemalis , letterpress title (Index on verso), engraved garden plate with text for plate I on verso, and 12 numbered engraved plates of plants, all but pl. 12 with Latin text on verso. Apparently an early issue, as there are 51 plates before the addition of insects, 33 before the addition of backgrounds, and one unnumbered, and it does not include the Altera Pars that is sometimes found as a fifth, and final, part. See Nissen BBI 1494; see Hunt 199; Savage 'The Hortus Floridus' ( Transactions of the Bibliographical Society , second series IV, pp.181-205).
