PATEK PHILIPPE PERPETUAL CALENDAR REF. 3940P IN PLATINUM, SOLD IN 1994 Two-body circular platinum case, signed, n. 2958281, concave bezel and lugs, snap on caseback, crown with Calatrava cross, correctors on the sides. Patek Philippe leather strap and platinum buckle. Opaline silvered dial, signed, applied white gold bâton indexes, minute divisions with small circular markers, Aprior symbol, subdials for 24-hours, indications of the day, month, date, moon-phases and leap year. White gold dauphine hands. Self-winding movement, rhodium-plated caliber 240Q, signed, n. 774711, 27 jewels, côtes de Genève and perlage finishing, Geneva seal, 22K gold microrotor, lever escapement, Gyromax balance, adjusted to heat and cold, isochronism and five positions, free-sprung flat hairspring, KIF shock-absorber. Fitted with Patek Philippe box, outer box, document holder, booklets, setting pin, Certificate of Origin and Extract from the Archives, Verga purchase receipt. Diameter Ø: 36 mm Note: working. Reference 3940 represents one of the most iconic models in Patek Philippe history. Heir to references 3448 and 3450, the first perpetual self-winding calendars made by the Genevan Maison, it expresses a more modern interpretation of its predecessors, with a more fluid and less angular case design, as well as a completely revised dial layout. The newly introduced caliber 240Q was the first Patek Philippe movement to use a micro-rotor. Produced from 1985 to 2007 primarily in yellow gold, in much more limited numbers in pink or white gold, and even more rarely in platinum, reference 3940 is distinguished by three different series, preceded by a limited pre-series: - Pre-series: 25 pieces created exclusively for the 225th anniversary of the Beyer boutique in Zurich, with champagne-colored dial. -First series: with cases with exclusively solid case back, sunken subdials and two-tone 24-hour counter. -Second series: with cases with solid case back and additional sapphire crystal case back (for all versions except platinum), sloped subdials and two-tone 24-hour counter (like the watch in the catalogue). -Third series: with cases with solid case back and additional sapphire crystal case back (for all versions except platinum), sloped subdials and monochromatic 24-hour counter. The watch in this auction is in excellent condition, having been rarely used. To further increase its collectible value, it is accompanied by its complete set of accessories: box, outer box, various booklets, wallet, pin, certificate of origin, extract from the archives, and even the original purchase receipt in Italian lire.
