Provenance : George Roots, F.S.A. (compilor, additional titles dated 1888). Fourth edition, large paper copy. THIS EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY COMPILED BY THE ANTIQUARY GEORGE ROOTS. The plates are beautifully presented and the work contains the most extensive collection of views of London to be offered at auction for many years. The illustrations range in date from the late-16th to late-19th century, and although the majority are of subjects relating directly to London, the work does include a significant minority of views around Great Britain, France and Italy. The watercolours include a view of the Sunday Times building (titled "Corner of Badger St. & Fleet St." on verso), a pencil and wash drawing by C.Hill titled "Long Acre West Smithfield 1841" and 24 views of shops in the Smithfield and Clerkenwell area in about 1880 (these are unsigned, include a few duplicates and are by a talented amateur), a number of the other watercolours of tombs and monuments are signed by Thomas Gosden. The two documents are a 1p. LS from George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, dated 6 April 1661, to Sir William Compton, the Master of Ordnance, requesting supplies for his regiment (vol. 8), and a 1p. DS by John Barnard (Lord Mayor of London in 1762), dated 1755 (in vol. 14). The plates, plans and maps include work by or after William Hollar, de Wit S. & N. Buck, Joseph Farington Robert Sayer Robert Morden and Philip Lea, Thomas Rowlandson Canaletto, Thomas and John Bowles Laurie and Whittle, Holbein and others. The majority of the plates are copper-engraved (most uncoloured), but the work also includes steel-engravings, lithographs, wood-engravings, 66 mezzotints (including a number of fine large format portraits), 19 colour-printed portraits after Holbein (some large format from Imitations of Original Drawings , London: 1792) and 177 aquatints (70 hand-coloured). The subjects are largely topographical views (including a number of fine panoramas, particularly in the first volume), but also include portraits and 139 maps and plans of London and its boroughs (9 double-page, 3 folding).
