This issue contains an inside page printing of the Act by the State of Pennsylvania granting an exclusive steamboat monopoly to John Fitch. Fitch invented a steam engine years before Robert Fulton and was granted the "sole right and advantages of making and employing the Steam Boat..." by the State of Pennsylvania. He made his first trial run in 1787, and was operating a regular run on the Delaware River by the Summer of 1790. John Fitch (January 21, 1743-July 2, 1798) was an American inventor, clockmaker, entrepreneur and engineer. In 1785, Fitch began working on his ideas for a steam-powered boat in Warminster, PA. He was unsuccessful in trying to raise funds from the Continental Congress, but was able to convince many state legislatures to award him a 14-year monopoly on their inland waterways for steamboat traffic. This was an enormous victory, as he was then able to secure funds from local businessmen and professionals in Philadelphia. On August 22, 1787, his steamboat Perseverance made its first successful trial run on the Delaware River. Robert Fulton would later turn Fitch's idea into a profitable business. Condition: Brittleness at edges and some separation at crease. Small holes along left edge.
