PERRIER-JOUËT This house was founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas-Marie Perrier-Jouët. Under the leadership of his son Charles, the company became famous with its nickname P-J. In 1959 Mumm bought a majority shareholding in the company and the house became part of the Canadian Seagram group. Michael Budin, who led the firm up until the late eighties, was a great admirer of Art noveau and opened a Belle Epoque museum in 1990, twenty years after launching the cuvée de prestige of the same name. Belle Epoque has become a great success everywhere, and the Americans in particular have fallen for the flower-bedecked bottle. The house owns 108 hectares in seven villages and the other 65 of the grapes are bought in from 40 villages. The most important village is Cramant, where the firm owns 29 hectares of the very best slopes. Compared to other houses the heritage has been kept well. The vines are very old and produce fantastic grapes that can dominate an entire cuvée even if small in proportion to the total content, and the delicate house style is dependent on these Chardonnay grapes. Perrier-Jouët competes with neighbouring house Pol Roger for the number one spot in Epernay. Both make fruity medium-bodied champagnes in a broad and sophisticated style, but Pol Roger's wines are somewhat drier and Perrier-Jouët's more personal. The vintage wine is a classic and both the Belle Epoque wines are a great source of joy for the romantic wine lover.
