Peter Lombard's Sententiarum libri IV Anton Koberger after 2 March 1491 PETRUS LOMBARDUS (1096-1160). Sententiarum libri IV. With commentary of Saint Bonaventure. –BECKENHAUB, Johannes. Tabula. Articuli in Anglia et Parisiis condemnati. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger [after 2 March 1491]. First edition of the commentary by Saint Bonaventure on the Sentences, a mixed set of notable provenance, including the Charterhouse at Buxheim, Kempten Abbey, and the humanist Jakob Merstetter. This is one of three editions of this important work printed by Anton Koberger The set is accompanied by one of two versions of the table, found variously in surviving copies; the present set has Tabula B. HC 3540*; BMC II 433; BSB-Ink P-387; CIBN B-622; Goff P-486; ISTC ip00486000; Tabula: H 3541; BMC III 694; CIBN B-623; Goff P-487; ISTC ib00292000. Chancery folio, four volumes (300 x 210mm). 5 parts (I, II, III-IV, Table): 204, 260, 218, 272, 104 leaves. 2 large initials in burnished gold on blue ground and vice versa, each within a square parti-colored frame; parts I and II with red or blue Lombards, red paraghs, parts III-IV and Table unrubricated (small paper flaws in margins of 3 leaves, a few sheets slightly browned, tiny wormholes in margins at end of part IV). Contemporary Nuremberg blindstamped calf over wooden boards, parts 1 and II: clasps and brass cornerpieces; parts III-IV [different workshop]: clasps and brass cornerpieces similar to those on parts I and II; Tabula: clasps (all volumes with leather splitting at joints, some clasps lacking, all volumes with endpapers renewed). Provenance: parts I and II: Charterhouse Buxheim (inscriptions dated 1494) – Kempten Abbey (inscriptions); Parts III-IV: illegible inscription, extensive marginal annotation in an early modern hand; Table: Jakob Merstetter (1460-1521, professor at the University of Mainz; inscriptions dated 1497 and 1499) – acquired from William H. Schab, New York 8 April 1955.
