PETER SIMON PALLAS (1741-1811) Histoire des Découvertes faites par divers savans voyageurs Dans plusieurs contrées de la Russie & de la Perse Bern: Société Typographique, and The Hague: Pierre-Frederic Gosse, 1779-1787. 6 volumes, 8° (197 x 116mm). Four (of 5) folding engraved maps, 41 (of 47) engraved plates, 2 folding. Volumes III and IV without half-titles. (Occasional light browning, one plate shaved.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spines gilt in compartments, red and black morocco labels (spine heads with small chips, one side with small area of wear). This collection of voyages, edited by Jean-Rodolphe Frey des Landres, includes Pallas' expedition, Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin journey into Persia, and Ivan Ivanovitch Lepekhin's voyage, The missing plates are all from volume IV, and were apparently never bound-in.
