PETTUS, John (1613-1690). Fodinae regales. Or the History, Laws and PLaces of the Chief Mines and Mineral Works in England, Wales, and the English Pale in Ireland. As also of the Mint and Money , London: H.L. and R.B. for Thomas Basset, 1670. 2° (293 x 180mm). Engraved portrait by Sherwin, 2 plates of mineworkings and 2 large illustrations of arms in the text, with the final errata leaf (a little spotting). 19th-century calf (rubbed, spine a little worn). Provenance : Crown Estate Office, Office of Woods Library (library stamps on front free endpaper). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this interesting work on mining in the British Isles, undertaken at the behest of Prince Rupert by the royalist Sir John Pettus who lost more than £20,000 in the King's cause during the civil war. He was also the author of several political works and translated Ereckens' mining treatise into English. Wing P1908.
