Beschreibung:

American (Philadelphia), ca 1765. A Chippendale highboy in mahogany and pine secondary, the upper case having a pierced broken arched pediment terminating in carved swirls with three urn finials and central rosette, molded cornice with accent dentil work and molding, above two fitted and four elaborately carved graduated drawers with pierced brass pulls, flanked by fluted quarter columns, the lower case consisting of one over three aligned and shell carved drawers, flanked by fluted quarter columns, a carved and shaped apron, all rising on cabriole legs with carved knees and claw and ball feet. Label in interior drawer attributing highboy to Benjamin Randolph; ht. 94.5, wd. 44.5, dp. 24.5 in. This lot was purchased from the 1963 auction of the collection of Charles Newton an employee of Henry Ford during the 1920s and 30s. Newton was instrumental in the development of the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, working as a buyer of property and antiques for the institution. The property was housed in 'The Queen's Residence' in Ypsilanti, Michigan, built in 1870 and modified by Newton to its current Classical Revival form. Provenance:Purchased at the Newton Collection Auction, Lot 212, Schmidt's Antiques, July 18, 1963, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Condition: Both upper and lower case match, legs original to the piece, as is central lower drawer. Carving on drawer faces are not of the period, however, and probably done sometime during the early 20th century. Pediment constructed of older and newer elements, finials newer. The front facings in the upper case appear to be original, as do some of the drawer facings (although carving is later). The apron and blocks are replacements.
