THE SPANISH CROWN TAXES THE CHURCHES OF NEW SPAIN A royal decree concerning the distribution of tithes raised from the new bishoprics and churches established in the newly conquered lands of New Spain. Philip directs "my officials of New Spain" to enforce his decree to divide the tithes from "the churches in Mexico and Taxcala": the prelate should receive a quarter share, and the town council another quarter. The remaining half should be divided into nine parts, from which two-ninths is to be paid to the treasury for the King.
