Margaret of Austria, the illegitimate daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Johanna Maria van der Gheynst, was close to her half-brother, Philip II; after leaving Italy for the Netherlands in 1555, she entrusted the care of her only surviving son to him. In turn, he appointed her Governor of the Netherlands in 1559 when he left for Spain, where her son, Alexander (future Duke of Parma), would be raised.
