PHILIP II (King of Spain, 1556-1598). Autograph letter signed ('Yo el Rey') to Charles IX (King of France), n.p., n.d. [1572], in Spanish , declaring that he rejoiced at his correspondent's letter and the report given by his ambassador of the punishment ordered to be given to the admiral (Coligny) and those of his persuasion, and the Marquis of Ayamonte who will shortly arrive will convey this in more detail. Meanwhile, he wishes to rejoice with the French king and congratulate him on so Christian and valiant a resolution and execution 'pero entretanto me quiero alegar por esto con V.M . y darle la nora buena de tan Christiana y valerosa determinacion y execution', and pledges his support if his services are needed to carry this still further, one page, folio (315 x 210 mm) , 'Senor' inscribed at the head beneath the sign of the cross, integral leaf addressed 'Al Rey Chri . . Buen Hermano', papered seal (dampstains). An important letter written on receiving the news of the massacre of St Bartholomew, in which Admiral Coligny was assassinated and over 3000 Hugenots died, on 22-24 August 1572. One of the consequences of this terrible event was the lifting of the threat of war between France and Spin. In addition to the letter from Charles IX to which this letter is the reply, Philip II had received despatches from his ambassador in Paris, when the massacre was in full spate, and Catherine de Medici wrote on August 28, announcing that God had given the King the means of ridding himself of his rebellious subjects. On October 11, Philip II instructed Don Antonio de Zuniga, Marquis of Ayamonte, to undertake a special mission to congratulate Charles IX on these events, and the present letter, referring to Ayamonte's imminent visit, was probably despatched in the first part of October 1572.
