DescriptionPhilip III
Carta executoria de nobleza y hidalguía in favour of Pedro Burgueño and his brothers, signed by the king ("Yo el Rey") and others, including Philip's secretary Tomas de Angulo and the Archbishop of Burgos. San Lorenzo, 14 August 1618
folio (295 x 200mm.), illuminated manuscript on vellum, [2], 13, [2]ff., plus 3 blank vellum leaves at end (one with text erased), first leaf with large illuminated armorial of Philip III on verso (recto blank), second leaf with a scene of the Virgin and Child with St Anna (holding a book and showing a small coloured bird to the Child) and the arms of Burgueño, on the verso a portrait of Philip III with the text below erased, a further illuminated armorial of Burgueño on f. 4v, red silk interleaving for the illuminations, contemporary calf gilt, covers tooled to a fan design, stubs of green and red silk ties, cord remaining from where the seal would have been attached, printer's waste in binding, paper endleaves, binding rubbed
A grant of arms for Pedro Burgueño of Tudela de Duero (near Valladolid), who was descended from the Hernando Burgueño who had travelled to New Spain with Hernán Cortés, taken part in the conquest of Mexico and witnessed the defeat and death of Moctezuma. Hernando Burgueño had been granted these arms in 1531 as well as the encomienda of Zinacantepec in the valley of Toluca.
One of the quarters of the armorial seemingly depicts an enthroned Moctezuma with a noose around his neck (named as a Cacique in the document), though no other contemporary sources state that he was chained.Condition reportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate
