Hand-coloured engraved title, dedication with hand-coloured vignette, 18 hand-coloured engraved plates. (Occasional light spotting and marginal browning.) Original cloth (re-backed retaining most of original spine, loss to paper label, rubbed with wear to corners). SOWERBY, James (1757-1822) & James Edward SMITH (1759-1828). English Botany; or, coloured figures of British Plants , London: R. and J. E. Taylor, [1847-] 1852. 7 volumes only (of 12), 8° (220 x 140mm). Approximately 1,500 part hand-coloured engraved plates by James Sowerby (Lacking 5 vols., a few plates loose, hinges weakening, common names of plants written in pencil on endpapers, in margins or on plates, occasional light spotting, browning and waterstaining.) Original cloth, spines with paper labels adhered with hand-written notes (rubbed and faded). Provenance : Edmund Owen (owner's stamp on front endpapers). Third edition. Freeman p.318; Nissen BBI 2225; Pritzel 8789. With John Sowerby & C. Pierpoint Johnson's British Wild Flowers (London, 1902). The lot sold as a collection of plates not subject to return. (9)
