(27) ⁂The inscriptions identified as by William Smith (1711-87) poet, classicist, chaplain to Edward Stanley, the 11th Earl of Derby: they concern the gift of the book to Smith Thomas Phillips (1708-74) Jesuit priest and scholar, chaplain to George Talbot, the 14th Earl of Shrewsbury. The inscriptions: to title: "T. Philips Author of a Life of Cardinal Pole, & Chaplain to | Ld Shrewsbury"; to front endpaper: "NB. This piece written by Father Philips, Chaplain | to the Earl of Shrewsbury, the first Earl of England and a Papist, | was sent as a present through the conveyance of Sr Rowland | Stanley a Papist to me, who am Chaplain to the second Earl, | of England, and the first Protestant Earl, the Earl of Derby". A further inscription on the front pastedown, in another hand: "This Book was a present from the author to | Dean Smith whose hand writing appears | on the Title page, and on the leaf before | the Title".
