PHOTOBOOK] DENBY, EDWIN. In Public, In Private. . Prairie City, Ill.: The Decker Press, 1948. First edition of this collaborative book of poems by Denby and photographs by Rudy Burckhardt Plain blue cloth with gilt titles. 80 pp., plus sixteen plates. Frontispiece by William de Kooning. A handful of corrections in pen to the text, presumably by Denby, most of which significantly alter the meanings of the lines. Spine sunned, occasional browning and staining to text, otherwise fine. Aside from being a very interesting photobook on New York City, In Public, in Private is a testament to the lifelong friendship between Denby and Burckhardt. Edwin Denby (1903-1983) was known for his formally strict but inventive poetry that proved to be a major (and still underappreciated) influence on the New York School of poets. Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) has been rediscovered as a major photographer of the 1950s and was recently the subject of a monograph published by the MoMA press. Provenance: Collection of Lincoln Kirstein
