a small 8vo album in half brown leather with gilt title on spine reading Massachusetts House Of Representatives 1880, with gilt foredges and 244 CDV-sized albumen oval portraits of members. A minimum of 28 of these were Civil War veterans (likely many others with names too common) who served in the state militia during the war. These members include John W. Adams, Corporal, 34th Infantry, Wounded POW New Market, Va.; John F. Berry, Private, 13th Infantry; John W. Bigelow, Private, 10th Infantry, promoted to Sergeant; Joseph Burt, Jr., Captain, 47th Infantry; Dexter Butterfield, Private, 2nd Infantry; Clinton H. Dodge, Private, 52nd Infantry; George D. Glover, Sergeant, Salem Cadets; Thomas J. Hastings, Sergeant, 15th Infantry, POW Petersburg, Va., promoted 1st Lt.; Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Captain, 51st Infantry, wounded, promoted Colonel of 33rd U.S.C.T.; Edwin I Horton, Corporal, 40th Infantry, promoted Sergeant; Russell S. Peabody, Private, 15th Infantry, POW Petersburg, Va.; Henry Moses Phillips, Private, 7th R.I. Cavalry, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 4th Massachusetts Cavalry, promoted Captain; J. Marcus Rice, Surgeon, 25th Infantry, wounded in abdomen, Roanoke Island, N.C., POW New Berne, N.C.; Stephen Rich, 1st Sergeant, 8th Infantry, commissioned Lieutenant 32nd Infantry, promoted Captain; William Smeath, Musician, 2nd Infantry, reenlisted 4th Cavalry; Zenas Smith, Private, 43rd Infantry; Eben Francis Stone, Captain, 48th Infantry, promoted Colonel; William H. Tozer, Private, 2nd Infantry, promoted Sergeant; and Alonzo Carter Webber, Surgeon, 43rd Infantry. There is also a photograph of a very young Henry Cabot Lodge in this album. The album still retains the original sale receipt for one of the representatives, a Mr. J.F. Berry.
