PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS -- "Southern Africa," an early 20th-century oblong 4° (267 x 358mm) photograph album containing c. 95 mounted photographs principally of the construction of the Benguela railway in Angola including bridges and viaducts, Lobito railway station and harbour including shipping, an accident, preparations for the visit of the Crown Prince of Portugal etc., all neatly captioned, folding lithographed map at end dated 1907 showing route of the railway, contemporary morocco gilt, the upper cover stamped "C.M. from J.N.G." The album was presented to Sir Charles Herbert Theophilus Metcalfe, sixth Baronet (1853-1928), who was a consulting engineer for the Benguela Railway and who lived in South Africa for long periods between 1882 and 1914. See D.N.B. With 2 other photograph albums, the first principally of Indian subjects (one of which is illustrated on the front cover of this catalogue), the second including views of Pretoria and Valletta, chiefly their hospitals, 2 photographs including Lord Kitchener and Col. Baden Powell respectively, variously dated 1903-4, and a sketch book. (4)
