"Buffalo Bill" Cody standing with Retired U.S. Cavalry Sergeant Robert J. Walker on the sidewalk before the facade of a building. Both men wear hats and heavy topcoats, and snow has drifted on the awning, windowsills, and around lamppost. Mat with studio imprint of Curt E. Engelbrecht, Springfield, MA, with inscription below reading, "Robert J. Walker / Formerly Sergt. D Troop / 5th US Cav." The 5th U.S. Cavalry, a re-designation of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in 1861, engaged in important Civil War battles including Gaines' Mill, Kelly's Ford, Brandy Station, Trevilian Station, and Tom's Brook. After the War, the regiment disbanded, and its companies were assigned to various locations throughout the South on Reconstruction duty. In 1868, Buffalo Bill accompanied four of the regiment's squadrons westward, in response to an ongoing conflict with tribes on the Southern Plains, though it is uncertain whether or not he and Walker met at this time.
