[PHOTOGRAPHY]. [KARGER, George (1902-1983), photographer]. Archive of 4 Scrapbooks with Mounted Original Photos and Clippings by Karger and an Original Caricature of Karger. [V.p., ca. 1940s-1950s]. Folio scrapbooks of 56 original black and white photos of theater, fashion or human interest subjects photographed by Karger, along with numerous clippings (color and black and white) from magazines that Karger worked for (including Life Magazine, Collier’s, Parade, Cosmopolitan and Time). Original photos are generally 13 ½ x 10 ¼” or somewhat smaller - most are mounted onto the leaves of the various scrapbooks. The unmounted photos have Karger’s credits inkstamped to versos. 2 spiral-bound scrapbooks with transparent plastic covers, 1 scrapbook in limp leather covers, one scrapbook of mounted clippings especially made by Karger for his “Photographic Dramatization” of Black Boy (based on the work of Richard Wright “Photography / Directing / Casting / Locations Selected by / George Karger / As Seen in Life [Magazine]”). Some original photos include scenes from various theater productions (most are unidentified, but one is Miss Liberty, starring Eddie Albert, with songs by Irving Berlin (Berlin is featured in 2 photos - one of these photos also features Robert E. Sherwood (author), Jerome Robbins (choreographer) and Moss Hart (director)). Some general wear, toning to scrapbooks, photos, a few scrapbook leaves are loose. And pen and pencil caricature of Karger with camera (sight approximately 16 x 10 ¼” framed size approximately 24 x 17”). Inscribed “To George Karger Sharp 1936”. Some soiling to frame. Still, generally fine. Additionally included are loose clippings and vintage magazines in which Karger’s works appeared (generally worn).
