Beschreibung:

Album containing 71 sepia-toned gelatin silver prints by George S. McComb, predominately 4½ x 6½ to 7½ x 9½ inches, 1906, mounted (a few loosely inserted), captioned in white ink alongside, oblong folio, limp cloth, upper cover titled in white ink: "Photographic Souvenirs of the San Francisco Calamity," some wrinkling to photographs but image quality generally excellent with occasional oxidation, several photographs bearing captions which have been removed or crossed out, mild wear to covers. A stunning collection of photographs showing the immediate aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Labeled in detail and providing extensive coverage of the destruction to the city, the album depicts crumbled buildings, leveled city blocks, sunken streets, buildings ablaze, tent cities and bread lines, panoramic views, and several before and after shots. The album is nearly identical to another sold in these rooms which identified George S. McComb as the photographer on the cover, and it is presumed that McComb assembled these albums and sold them out of his studio as souvenirs. McComb's name is written in white ink in the corner of several of the present photographs, though at least one photograph bears the copyright stamp of "A. Blumberg, Alameda, CA," on the verso.
