Title: Pictorial History [of the] 28th Bombardment Group (C), XI Bomber Command Author: The 28th U.S. Bomber Group Place: [Washington, DC] Publisher: United States Army Date: August 7, 1945 Description: Set of 2 confidential report folders on the attack of the Kurile Islands, located north of Hokkaido in Japan. First folder with 19 photographic sheets, displaying 56 images (some in a collage), including a map of the Kurile Islands; lettered in the negative, some with small drawings. * Other marked "Pireport" on the front cover and contains 39 full-page photographs, including 3 showing hand-drawn maps of the Kurile Islands with blue and red lines (2 show lines between the Shimushu and Paramushiru Islands region, the other with a red looping line passing by Matsuwa Island). Also, with 50 pages of text, all with "Confidential" typed on the bottom margin. Together, 2 folders with sheets, approx. 10x8". Pictorial account, U.S. Army during WWII. The 28th Bombardment Group was activated on February 1, 1940. Aircrafts flown include: the P-38, P-39, P-40, B-26 and LB30's, from 1941 to 1943. From 1944 on, they also used the B-24 and B025 bombers. The 28th BG was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its' operations of April 1944 to August 1945 during which its attacks on the targets based in the Kurile Islands forced the Japanese to move some of their valuable air power to this region, therefore reducing the available air power in the southern areas, which in turn helped out the Allied forces. Includes a highly detailed report along with the several aerial views (from May 1945 to August 1945) that were used by the 28th Bombardment Group (C) under the XI Bomber Command, showing the specific bombing locations in the Kurile Islands. The photographs are also marked with diagrams for bombing targets along with numbers for sequence of bombing hits. Some of the photographs are rubberstamped "Confidential" on the verso. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor edge wear, text pages with some toning, slight curling to photo edges; contents still in near fine condition. Item number: 141406
