PIERCE-ARROW MODEL 1245 SEDAN Chassis No. 3120061 Engine No. 405135 Dark red with grey leather driver's seat and a grey broadcloth passenger compartment Engine: 80 degree V-12, 462ci., 175bhp at 3,400rpm; Gearbox: four-speed manual; Suspension: I-beam axle front and hypoid rear; Brakes: four wheel mechanical power unit. Left hand drive. This handsome sedan, on a long 139" wheelbase chassis, is an excellent example of the late classic era Pierce-Arrows. It is both a substantial motor car, originally weighing 5,713 pounds filled with gasoline, oil and water, and a thoroughly contemporary vehicle of the time, with enchanting character. The up-to-the-minute streamlined body design included a traditional-style radiator cap fashioned from the Pierce-Arrow archer shooting an arrow. The detailing in the body is remarkable. Tail lights are adapted from Pierce's streamlined Silver Arrow showcar. Looking down on this sedan discloses a special visual treat. The top of the hood is trimmed with a large arrow, beginning with the arrowhead at the base of the archer radiator cap and continuing to the cowl. Such a view could regularly be enjoyed by someone being met by this car, particularly if standing at the top of some steps at an entryway or porte-cochere. Some of the interior's fine points include twin glove boxes in the dash, one on each side of instruments that were originally faced with convex watch crystal lenses. A clock is part of the instrumentation in the rear compartment, as is a center arm rest so thick it can be used by two passengers simultaneously. Few classic motor cars match this Pierce-Arrow's technical attributes. The 175hp twelve cylinder power plant is one of the great automobile engines of the 1930s, powering Ab Jenkins' speedsters to win dozens of world speed records on the salt flats of Salturo, Utah. The 80-degree vee of its cylinder banks allows easier servicing of the valve mechanism; its Stewart Warner power brakes were a cut above the competition's vacuum-boosted systems. The box-girder design of the frame and the long semi-elliptic springs of flat camber are unseen secrets of the car's impressive ride. These 1935 Pierce-Arrows originally incorporated special insulation to seal the dash from the engine compartment, something Pierce adopted from airplane construction of the time. Mr. Browning purchased this example from Mr. Leo Parnoglan in 1989. Limited documentation of prior ownership of the car indicates that it was registered in Indiana in 1935 as it still retains its original license plate numbered 724249. A vehicle registration on the steering wheel also shows Mr. Otto Klausamyer showing the car in 1970 at a Pierce-Arrow meet. Since joining the Collection, little has been done to alter the car's overall older restoration condition. In fact it appears as though the Pierce has never had its body off as the underbody and chassis details look very undisturbed. This car has presentable paint with cracks and scratches in different areas. Its brightwork is flawed, such as blemishing on the grille, but is also quite presentable. The underbody is very original. It looks largely untouched and a bit rusty. Modern turn signals have been discreetly added at the top of the front bumper. The dashboard is a combination of NOS and original gauges, with an Arvin heater under the dash. Whitewall tires are fitted onto painted steel wheels. The dual sidemount tires have locking hubcaps and are fitted in the correct metal cases. A nice original period trunk in the rear includes a single suitcase. The later model Pierce-Arrows such as this Model 1245 are among the best driving classic-era cars and are favorites for touring. They offer a superb motoring environment. Features such as power brakes and an adjustable steering post make them highly desirable to participate in many car functions. This sedan is eligible at Pierce-Arrow Society, AACA, Classic Car Club and VMCCA events. WITHOUT RESERVE
