PIERCE, FRANKLIN, President. Autograph letter signed ("Franklin Pierce") to Secretary of the Navy M[ahlon] Dickerson, Washington, D.C., 20 March 1838, 1 page, 4to, 249 x 197 mm. (9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in.), integral address leaf with panel in Pierce's hand. A glowing recommendation for a descendant of General John Stark, victor of the Battle of Bennington in the Revolutionary War: "Having been informed that Charles Stark Newell, is an applicant for the situation of Purser in the U.S. Navy I take pleasure in adding mine to the numerous testimonials in his favor...Mr. Newell is a graduate of Harvard College and a young gentleman of high attainments and excellent character. He is a great grandson of Genl. Stark of the Revolution and I believe inherits the high qualities which distinguished his ancestor. If the appointment can consistently be conferred upon him it would be highly gratifying...."
