Letter written and signed in his name to Ludovico 'il Moro' Sforza, Duke of Bari and Regent of Milan, Florence, 5 October 1492 , saying that he would have sent the desired model of the 'casa' built by his father Lorenzo at Poggio had he had one to hand; as it is, a new one will be made by Giuliano 'ingegnero apportatore del questo' who will also bring it to Ludovico, 10 lines on one page, 176 x 250mm, address panel on verso, papered seal (worm hole, damage to one corner, two very small tears at edge). On the death of his father Lorenzo 'il Magnifico' in 1492 Piero took his place as head of the de' Medici family and leading figure in the government of Florence. The 'house' he refers to in this letter is the Villa Medici at Poggio a Caiano built for Lorenzo as a classical country retreat by his favourite architect Giuliano da Sangallo One of the key buildings of the Florentine renaissance, it was a completely new departure in Florentine villa design, incorporating ideas from Alberti, Vitruvius and Pliny the Younger. It is often suggested that the literary ideas behind its design were supplied by Lorenzo; this idea of the villa as the product of a collaboration between architect and patron is implicit in Piero's sending Giuliano with the model so that Ludovico 'intendera anchora meglio lanimo et intentione di Lorenzo'. As well as being one of the most innovative architects of the latter part of the 15th century, Giuliano was in constant demand as a woodworker and the production of architectural models was an important part of this output. In this instance the provision of the model appears to be part of a diplomatic exchange. Vasari reported that Giuliano gave a model for a palace to Charles VIII when he accompanied Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere to Lyon in 1495. The courteous final sentence of this letter makes it certain that it was the gift of a wooden model that Giuliano da Sangallo was to present to Ludovico on Piero's behalf -- 'Havrai voluto potere mandarli lo edificio proprio non solamenti questo di legno'. Two letters from one of Piero's representatives in Milan, Angelo Niccolini, complete the tale; that of 13 October announcing the arrival of Giuliano in Milan, and that of 25 October reporting on Ludovico's honourable reception of the architect at Vigevano and his pleasure in accepting the model.
